*EXCLUSIVE* An interview with... MITSUME ★

Recently we were lucky enough to sit down with the super-talented and inspiring Japanese Artist MITSUME to discuss the current situation in Japan, his newly launched e-commerce store and advice on becoming an artist!

[AMP]:
Thank you for taking the time to talk to us, It is a real privilege.

[AMP]:
First of all, How are you doing? How is it going during these difficult times??

[MITSUME]:
I haven't been in a corporate job for many years, and I've always been an artistically inclined painter, so my life hasn't changed much. I haven't gone out much, to begin with, and I've always lived my life by staying in my room and painting. I don't have any actual events any more, and I can't even go abroad, so it’s very boring and sad. It's frustrating that I can't make the most of the free time I have because it was a great motivation for me to present my paintings in an unknown place.

[AMP]:
For anyone trying to have a creative career as you have, What were the inspirations that guided you to where you are now?

[[MITSUME]:
Always be aware of what’s not visible to the eye. Such as the news, advertisements, common sense, education, inspiration, everything that comes into my life. What exists behind it all?
To feel that, I cut it from different angles and look at its cross-sections. Something only I can see it, feel, put it into words. That kind of energy becomes a strong piece of work that is unique to me. In the true sense of the word, I feel that if I want to find my own unique inspiration, I shouldn't look to anything else for guidance.

Understand yourself deeply and try to find your own unique way of doing things.

[AMP]:
A lot of your artwork seems to be heavily-based around Women. Is there any reason why this is your preference?

[MITSUME]:
My artwork depicts an existence that is neither female nor male, but it indeed looks more like a woman. It's because of the curves. The curves are feminine, and I look for delicacy in those curves. They are strong and fragile, delicate and bold, and I try to make them beautiful and fragile. I try to express a beautiful and ephemeral existence in my work.

->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->

[AMP]:
There is so much detail in each artwork you create, how long does it take to create one piece?

[MITSUME]:
When I get engrossed, I tend to forget the time so I’m not sure exactly how much time passes. If I were to say only my labour time, maybe around 30 hours…? What is important is not how many hours it took me to complete a piece, but the time from when an idea comes to mind and explodes and expands into such big energy that I cannot help myself from painting. This comes suddenly, hits me like a lightning bolt. No matter what I am doing, I must not let this moment go. I’ll do this later. I can do this sometime else. If I feel like this, it’s too late...

->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->

[AMP]:
Do you have any new and exciting projects you are working on soon which you could tell us about?

[MITSUME]:
It is difficult for me to tell you specifically at this moment, but I am striving for a new way of expression. To do that, I need a new art piece. Please follow my social media accounts for my latest info.

->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->

[AMP]:
How does it feel being allowed to take part and appear as a guest at local events and even overseas?

[MITSUME]:
I feel that I am given wonderful opportunities that I cannot express in words. It is possible to see pictures and videos of the world on the internet, but the experience of actually going and being there holds infinite possibilities.
I would like to go anywhere in the world.

->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->

[AMP]:
So you have a webshop where you can sell merchandise containing your art, and very quickly it seems they were VERY popular with your customers and sold out completely. Well done by the way! How did you feel when you saw your T-shirt design be sold out?

[MITSUME]:
I am relieved... My creativity is not something that “I want everyone to like.” For me, it’s more of “I really like it myself.”

Many times, one researches the market, looking for what kind of items sell. However, I do not like that. That is why my items may not sell well. However, I am sure that there are fans around the world that really like my work. I produce items that are addressed to them, something that is just mine, something only I can produce, something that is like no other.

This is something that will not change, so I feel that the people who buy my merchandise and I are connected through our consciousness.

->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->

[AMP]:
Finally, Where would you like to see your work go in the future? Or do you think you have reached your goal now?

[MITSUME]:
The direction I am heading will never change. I put everything I have in something that only I can do. If someone else can do it, I will be useless. I must deny even myself, always look for new possibilities, and question common sense.

My goal is tremendously big, and sometimes it will be impossible to achieve during my lifetime. One thing I like about art is the point that “my artworks will live longer than myself.” Even after I am gone, my artworks will still be here. If I were to die, maybe, my artwork will connect with somebody, and further connect to that person’s goals and dreams.

An artist has many goals when they are active, but I think that this is the ultimate goal.

[AMP]:
Once again, thank you for taking the time to talk to us, and we really hope and look forward to seeing you soon.
